Mitchell man charged with wife’s suffocation death

Woman seriously injured in Saturday crash near Freeman

FREEMAN — A 51-year-old woman sustained serious injuries in a two-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon near Freeman.

At approximately 12:20 p.m., a 2002 Pontiac Montana driven by the woman was traveling south on U.S. Highway 81, when she entered the northbound lane and collided head-on with a 2009 Volvo Tractor, according to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.

The woman, whose name is not being released pending notification of family, was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected. She sustained serious, non-life threatening injuries and was airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital. Charges are pending against the woman.

The 27-year-old male driver of the tractor was wearing a seat belt and was uninjured in the crash.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating. The Hutchinson County Sheriff's Office also responded.
