Geraldine Ann Crisman

Geraldine Ann Crisman, 89, of Wagner, died Monday, February 12, 2018 at the Community Memorial Hospital in Wagner. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 AM, Friday, February 16, 2018 at St. John's Catholic Church in Wagner. Burial will be in the parish cemetery, rural Wagner. Visitation will be Thursday from 2 to 5 PM at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Wagner, followed by Rosary/Wake services at 7 PM at the church.

Geraldine Ann was the first born to Michael Francis Cahalan and Geneva Mary (Reineke) Cahalan on April 1, 1928 in Rockwell, IA. She grew up helping to raise her 5 siblings and also spent time with her fraternal grandmother after her grandfather had passed.

She graduated from Sacred Heart High School, Rockwell, IA in 1946. She began her 44 year nursing career with her graduation from St. Joseph Mercy School of Nursing, Sioux City, IA in 1949. She came to Wagner and began working at the Indian Health Service Hospital on October 6, 1949. A transfer took her to Belcourt, ND, after which she worked in pediatrics at the St. Louis City Hospital, St. Louis, MO, and the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Mason City. She returned to college and completed a nursing education degree at Winona, MN graduating in Nursing in 1954. While she was in school she worked in area hospitals part-time. After graduation, Geraldine taught pediatrics at St. Joseph Mercy School of Nursing for a year and a half.

She met Roy Crisman, Jr, and they married on February 11, 1956, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rockwell, IA. They enjoyed 60 years of marriage and to this union six children were born - Jim, Charles, Maureen, Cynthia, Mary and Paul.

Geraldine was involved in many community organizations. She was a 60 year member of both the American Legion Auxiliary and the Catholic Daughters of America. She was very active in the various projects over many years. In addition she organized blood drives for many years. Other organizations she was involved in include Right to Life, Flying Farmers of America, National Retired Federal Employees, American Cancer Society and Business and Professional Women.

Geraldine gave to many projects. She made baby layettes for Right to Life, crocheted prayer shawls for individuals in need of prayer, and crocheted scarves for Special Olympics. She volunteered at the Wagner Good Samaritan Center with crafts, Friday mass, and distributing the weekly bulletin. She would walk the halls visiting with everyone she encountered. She also initiated the daily rosary at St. John's the Baptist Catholic Church, which has been ongoing for over 5 years.

Over her many years of volunteer work and involvement she received many awards and recognitions such as Wagner Community Club Citizen of the Year in 1998, Wagner Rotary Club Citizen of the Year in 2015, DOT FAA Wright Brothers "Master Pilot" Spouse Award in 2005, International Flying Farmers South Dakota Chapter Queen in 1994 and 1999, International Flying Farmers South Dakota Chapter Woman of the Year in 2000, Good Samaritan Society Volunteer of the Year in 2007, American Cancer Society, Gold Award from 1979-1980.

Grateful for sharing her life are her children, Jim (Chris) Crisman of Fort Collins, CO, Charles (Mariann) Crisman of Prince Frederick, MD, Maureen (Jim) Cadwell of Hermosa, SD, Cynthia (Steven) Stocks of Rapid City, SD, Mary (Gary) Hieb of Mitchell, SD and Paul (Cheryl) Crisman of Morris, IL. 17 Grandchildren and 7 Great Grandchildren, Brothers Kenny (Henrietta) Cahalan, Mason City, IA, David (Gloria) Cahalan, Dubuque, IA, Daniel (Helen) Cahalan, Rockwell, IA, and Sister Marsha (Dan) Peterson, Fort Collins, CO and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her into heaven were her husband, Roy Crisman Jr, Sister Barbara Fitzgerald, and her parents.
