Girls Hanson Classic pairings announced for Jan. 13
Eighteen girls basketball teams are scheduled to meet at the Corn Palace Jan. 13 for the 35th Hanson Classic, which announced its nine-game slate Saturday.
A pair of ranked Class B foes will kick off the primetime matchups, with third-ranked De Smet taking on No. 4 Avon at 6 p.m. For the second straight season at the Hanson Classic, the host Beavers will take on No. 1-ranked Sully Buttes at 7:30 p.m. The two-time defending state champion Chargers won that meeting 60-58 in 2017.
The nightcap at 9 p.m. will include top-ranked St. Thomas More -- the four-time defending state champions in Class A -- taking on No. 2-ranked Warner, which took fourth in Class B last season.
A number of other area schools are in the event again this year, as 14 of the 18 participants were in the 2017 event. Howard and Sanborn Central/Woonsocket will play in the 9 a.m. opener, followed by Timber Lake and Freeman at 10:30 a.m.
Madison and Ethan, which each made their respective state tournaments a year ago, will play at noon, followed by Class A No. 4 Dell Rapids and Tripp-Delmont/Armour at 1:30 p.m.
McCook Central/Montrose, ranked No. 5 in Class A in the most recent poll, will take on Nebraska powerhouse Crofton (Neb.) at 3 p.m., and undefeated Belle Fourche will face cross-state foe Flandreau at 4:30 p.m.
Admission -- which is good for all of the games -- is $10 for adults and $5 for students. The schedule is tentative and each contest will start 10 minutes after the prior contest ends.
